Every year The Columbus Dispatch previews the upcoming high-school football season with a special section. I have designed more than a dozen of these covers during my time at the newspaper and this was one of my favorites. The Dispatch printed five variations and delivered the zoned section to different areas of central Ohio. The idea to use cups in a fence came from The Dispatch entertainment editor, who joined us in an impromptu brainstorming session a few weeks before publication. It’s a perfect motif, because the fence an cups really speak to high-school football. Dispatch photographer Eric Albrecht, Art Director Scott Minister and I spent much of the day prepping the photo studio to get the lighting, fence and cups just right. The student athletes made each cover work with their smiles and enthusiasm.
