The Nuthouse

Print design / Art direction

This NCAA tournament cover is a great example of collaboration, pulling something together quickly and why I like working with Ohio State’s men’s basketball team.
Art Director Scott Minister wanted to do a cover that reflected the Buckeyes’ rabid student fan section, called The Nuthouse. He suggested creating a photo illustration combining big-head cutouts with file photos of fans and players. I suggested that we do photograph the scene for real, but didn’t think that we could assemble enough fans or have access to the Schottenstein Center, where the team plays. Sports Editor Ray Stein contacted the team’s media relations department and the student leader of The Nuthouse fans.
After team practice the next afternoon, more than 30 decked out fans started filling the seats for us. I passed out some big-heads of players and posters spelling out “NCAA.” Then star player David Lighty showed up to be part of the photo shoot. He held his own big-head cutout and played along perfectly. Dispatch photographer Chris Russell captured the enthusiasm and excitement.
